Jane McConnell is an internationally renowned intranet expert. Every year she publishes a very extensive study on trends in the field of intranet. More than 400 companies worldwide participated in the study. In this article I will highlight some interesting results from that report.
This is the sixth time that McConnell has published the Digital Workplace Trends research . The title of the report already shows how much the intranet is developing. The first reports were about the intranet, in recent years the scope of her reports has become much broader: focused on the digital workplace of employees. Boudewijn Bugter recently listed intranet trends from this report . I will not repeat them here.
The digital workplace is broader than the intranet. The report shows that only a small number of organizations have a central, uniform platform for this. The vast majority have a fragmented digital intranet, consisting of various separate platforms and applications.
Seeking and not finding
Search is still a major problem. Few organizations are satisfied with the findability of information, especially via the search engine of the intranet and the digital workplace. Organizations that are leaders in the intranet world involve their organization much more closely in improving this and/or add social functionality, such as tagging, to promote the findability of information. They also take their starting point from users more than other organizations when they improve the search functionality and analyze search statistics carefully.
