Is the Web dead?

Post by sohanuzzaman56 »

This is the question that Jordi Serra asked me for the article that he later published in bitscatalans . The question was prompted by the controversy surrounding the article published in the September issue of the prestigious Wired : The Web is Dead. Long Live the Internet .

And this is the answer I wrote for Jordi :

Definitely not. While I like Wired , Chris Anderson has bc data malaysia chosen a sensational headline this time . I don't think the apps Anderson mentions will displace the Web site, and certainly not anytime soon.

The article, while offering interesting data and ideas, is not rigorous. It mixes concepts and applies criteria and statistics without coherence . Sometimes it talks about supposed applications (i.e. Facebook, Youtube) as the opposite concept to a Web page (?). It insists that traffic through applications will soon surpass Web traffic (does Anderson really believe that applications are already consolidated? I think that most of us still spend most of our time on the Internet through a computer).

The Web itself, whose death Anderson certifies, betrays him. And it is the comments of his readers that show the main inconsistencies of his article.

Certainly, applications for iPads, iPhones and computers make our lives easier. But it will still take time for technology to find devices that offer us a user experience comparable to a web page viewed on a computer.

Finally, Anderson and Wolff attribute the death of the Web to capitalism. They believe that its difficult monetization, the decline in advertising investment and the desire for domination of the all-powerful are leading us to a world of freemium or paid applications, but applications at the end of the day. I am certainly not convinced by this. And I wonder if Anderson, when he writes these things, is oblivious to this capitalism that seems to govern us or if he has some interest in things being this way.
