Spain ranks second in terms of email penetration

According to data from the latest European Internet Usage Report from comScore, 397.2 million Europeans were online this month, which is an average of 25.9 hours per person. Among its findings, it is noteworthy that email remains very popular among European users, with almost 70% of the audience accessing email websites in June, showing a growth rate of 3.7 percentage points compared to last year. The United Kingdom and Spain lead the way in email penetration with a reach of 82.7% and 79.2% respectively among their online audiences. The report highlights Internet usage in 49 European markets aggregated under the Europe region and provides individual reports for 18 countries.
Email is growing among European countries
In Europe, 276.5 million people accessed websites such as Hotmail and Google Gmail via their computer, reaching 69.5% of the Internet audience aged 15 and over. The number of European email users grew by 14% compared to last year, reaching 276 million, while penetration increased by 3.7 percentage points.
The UK had the highest market penetration of web-based email usage at 82.7%, showing a 9% increase in total users over the previous year. Spain came in second in terms of penetration at 79.2%. Among the major email markets in Europe, Ireland had the highest growth in audience (up 23%), followed by Russia (21%). Spain, meanwhile, came in second in terms of penetration and had a 3% growth in its audience over June 2011.
Hotmail leader in the email category
Microsoft’s Hotmail, recently rebranded as Outlook.com, takes the address indonesia top spot as a web-based email provider in Europe with 108.2 million visitors (up 1% year-over-year) averaging 1.9 hours per user during the month. Google’s Gmail took second place in the email category with 74.7 million users, showing a strong growth rate of 18 percent year-over-year. Yahoo! Mail rounds out the podium in third place with 44.3 million users, being the most engaging email portal in the top 5 for users, spending an average of 2.1 hours there. Russian providers Mail.ru and Yandex round out the top 5 attracting 42.3 million and 25.1 million users respectively. Both portals showed the highest growth rates in audience among the European top 5 web-based email providers.

Below is a snapshot of internet usage in the 18 markets for which comScore provides individual reports. Russia's internet audience remains the largest per user in Europe with 58.8 million people accessing the web in June. The UK continues to demonstrate the highest engagement, with an average of 37.9 hours online per user. Spain, meanwhile, ranks seventh in usage, with 21.8 million unique visitors, who spent an average of 24.4 hours and viewed 2,127 web pages.
