Services Sector Reacts Amid Continuing Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many sectors of the Brazilian economy, and one of them has been the services sector. According to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), services in 2020 saw a 7.8% decline.

What is the sector and what are Services?
The Services sector is the largest in terms of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and employment in Brazil. It encompasses service activities and product trade, also known as the tertiary sector of the economy.

However, in February 2021, according to IBGE, the sector registered a growth of 3.7% compared to January, being the 9th consecutive increase, surpassing the pre-coronavirus pandemic level for the first time.

Also in February, eighteen states grew in the volume of services, among them São Paulo (4.3%), Minas Gerais (3.5%), Mato Grosso (14.8%) and Santa Catarina (3.9%).
