Free publicity thanks to real fans

Lego was not an official sponsor of the London Olympics. Especially since the Bavaria Dutch Dress incident during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, there have been strict rules for so-called ambush marketing , to protect official sponsors. Some rules border on the bizarre , such as the ban on the 800 Olympic caterers serving fries (French fries), which was only allowed for McDonalds.
Still, Lego managed to get an insane amount of free publicity during the Olympics. Thanks to fans, who made a stop-motion film. Two nice Dutch examples of stop-motion videos using Lego were made by Dennis Beelen from Oss and his son Tren (8) . First, the fantastic victory of Epke Zonderland in the gymnastics final on the horizontal bar, with nice commentary by Hans van Zetten. In addition, they made a Lego version of the final of the 50 meter freestyle on the with Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Marleen Veldhuis.

Also from England come some great examples of Olympic highlights. The Guardian hong kong telegram data (probably because of the strict sponsorship rules and high costs) commissioned the brick by brick video team to make a number of stop motion films of sporting highlights of “a certain international sporting tournament”. The best is that of Usain Bolt, who won gold in the final 100 meter sprint with a time of 9.63 sec.
