Businesses threatened by cybercrime

Post by Bappy11 »

Have you ever heard of the TV5Monde hack in 2015? Of the NotPetya ransomware that infected the Saint-Gobain site in Pont-à-Mousson in 2017, or of Mirai that, in 2016, infected thousands of connected cameras? With the daily use of the Internet becoming essential, the digital world has experienced resounding attacks in recent years. Indeed, with a lack of acculturation to cyber security (and also, as we have said, with the fact that the Internet was not initially designed with security issues in mind) and means to protect themselves or limit the proliferation of an attack, infected people, companies or entities have suffered serious consequences, both from an economic and media point of view, and for some of them, from a criminal point of view (for example, theft of customer data following the exploitation of a breach known by the vietnam telegram data company but not corrected can lead to legal sanctions; the most recent example is that of Uber and amounts to a penalty of more than one million euros). The attack on TV5Monde cost more than 5 million euros to change all the infected computer equipment, and caused the channel to stop broadcasting for several hours. NotPetya, which caused the complete shutdown of the installations for several days, caused more than 220 million euros in losses .

Beyond financially penalizing victims, it is also their reputation that is tarnished. Indeed, this breaks the trust that shareholders or customers can place on the ability to protect themselves against attacks. This leads in the short term to a significant drop in the value of the company on the financial markets, a loss of customers and can, in the long term, impact their business.

We are therefore faced with a situation where the various players on the market must today take into account security issues in order to both protect their system against attacks, but also do what is necessary to offer services or software solutions to their customers which guarantee a minimum of coverage against basic exploitation .
