This weekend, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are the last two federal states to start their summer holidays - and in Berlin and Brandenburg they end just a few days later. The motorways will be full. If you don't want to get stuck in traffic, you need to find out in advance and, if necessary, take other routes or travel on a different day.
A growing number of drivers are using digital technologies for this purpose, as shown by a representative survey conducted by the digital association Bitkom among 1,003 German citizens aged 16 and over. According to the survey, six out paytm database of ten drivers use their smartphone or tablet to find out about the traffic situation (60 percent). In 2017, the figure was 45 percent. In order to avoid getting stuck in a traffic jam, 28 percent check the situation on the roads with their mobile device before setting off. 34 percent of drivers do this while on the road.
"Map and traffic apps can use big data to analyze the situation on the roads in real time. This means they can not only report where there is a current traffic jam, but also calculate the expected waiting time and possible alternative routes," says Bitkom mobility expert Mario Sela. "Most people today have a smartphone or tablet and can use it as an intelligent navigation system to keep the time spent on the road as short as possible while on vacation."
