1997 was a very successful year for iRobot - a cleaning robot was developed for SC Johnson Wax. This was launched on the market as the AutoCleaner. Two of the scientists involved in the project began developing a household cleaning robot that would be affordable. They wanted to show that research results could also be implemented in commercially viable products.

With the knowledge from the cleaning segment and the armenia mobile database experience with cost-effective production, this project was put into action. The company grew very quickly from four to ten employees, then to 20 and due to the success a steady increase in the number of employees was reported - a proper office building or its own company headquarters was unavoidable.

In 2000, a merger with Real World Interface, a robotics company from New Hampshire, was planned. The name was changed to iRobot. Many products were developed that did not make it to market. The findings from this research were taken and invested in new products. Collaborations with partners such as National Geographic enabled the company to develop in a completely new way. The world's first floor cleaning robot was developed by a specially assembled team. It was a long road from prototype to final product - it took five years to develop.

iRobot Roomba was supposed to be the first of its kind. In addition to the vacuum cleaner robot, iRobot also offers floor cleaning robots (Scooba), gutter cleaning robots (Looj) and pool cleaning robots (Mirra).
