US Creates Science and Innovation Fund for Ukraine

US Special Representative for Ukraine Economic Recovery Penny Pritzker said that the US National Academy of Sciences is working to create a new multimillion-dollar joint fund to support science and innovation in Ukraine.

US Creates Science and Innovation Fund for Ukraine

The fund will finance special cutting-edge research in the service of economic development of Ukraine, as noted at the US-Ukraine Partnership Forum in Washington. The Research and Innovation Fund for Ukraine will provide short-term support to the Ukrainian research community and create the basis for a long-term innovation ecosystem in Ukraine, which will be based on science and commercialization.


According to Penny Pritzker, similar initiatives from the US National Academy of Sciences have already been implemented for Mexico, Israel, Pakistan, India and Egypt.


The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit institution established by a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It recognizes excellence in science through the election of members and, together kenya phone numbers with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine, advises the federal government and other organizations on science, technology, and health policy.


Support from the Science and Innovation Foundation

The US National Academy of Sciences is launching an $8 million Science and Innovation Fund for Ukraine, with support from the Simons Foundation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and other US philanthropies, with the goal of raising at least $15 million to fund the first three years of work. In addition to these organizations, ETH Zürich is also participating in the creation of the Fund.


What will the Fund's money be used for?

First, the Fund will provide grants to merit-based organizations and individuals to implement a variety of activities, including workshops to address scientific issues important to Ukraine’s long-term recovery, as well as bilateral and multilateral initiatives to advance science policy practice.


Secondly, the Foundation’s activities include support for various institutions in priority scientific and technical areas that will contribute to the future of Ukraine, as well as the provision of scholarships and research grants to support scientific exchanges at early and mid-career stages. It is also planned to organize trainings on the commercialization of scientific research.


In addition, it is planned to allocate grants to support the participation of Ukrainian researchers in international scientific research.
