WordPress.com does all of this for you, so there's no need to focus on plugin compatibility, checking release notes, or updating.

However, with WordPress.org, you have to make sure that your plugins and software are updated regularly. However, the software notifies you via the dashboard to check for updates, so you only need to click a button every one to two weeks. Alternatively, your hosting provider can manage.
